Advice on What to do while in Milan (and what not to do)
Things you should Do

Things you really should Not Do
  • Take a shopping trip to the fabulous shopping in the Galleria del Corso - only merchandise of the highest quality can be bought here but, unfortunately the prices reflect this.
  • Drink the water from the drinking taps conveniently placed on numerous street corners particularly in the historical center - it is completely clean natural mineral water that comes from a underground source that is as old as Mediolanum itself (Mediolanum is the Milanon name for Milan)
  • Tip the waiters approximately 10% of the bill as service is generally not included - only if you have enjoyed your meal and usually you do. Order the "Cotoletta Milanese" or Elephant Ears or if you are Vegeterian try the Risotto Milanese as this is Milan's Traditional Dish
  • Take a trip up to one of the lakes - lake Como or lake Maggiore are the most scenic although take an anorak as the weather can change in a flash and Violent Electrical storms occur in the Summer Months
  • In December go to Navigli and savour the magical festive atmosphere. Torchlit canals snake their way past revellers and Christmas shoppers as the city approaches Christmas Day
  • Go to a football match at the San Siro Stadium to see either Milan or Inter who are two of Italy's biggest and best football teams - the season lasts from mid September until the first week of June
  • Visit Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie
  • Wear long trousers when visiting any church or place of religious significance.
  • Stamp your metro or bus ticket - checks are very infrequent however if caught without a valid ticket you will be fined 50 Euro on the spot - if you don't have the cash they will take you to the nearest station.
  • Wear shorts or a t -shirt if you want to go and see the Duomo or any church
  • Ask why the Duomo was built so close to Metro
  • If you get lost do not blame it on the absence of a grid like street system
  • Order cappuccino after your evening meal - remember cappuccino is for morning and Espresso after lunch and dinner
  • Tell people off for smoking, in Italy a very high percentage of the population smokes therefore people are very tolerant
  • Eat spaghetti with a spoon - if you think you will make a mess just wear a bib by tucking your napkin into your shirt as strangely enough wearing a bib is cool in the Milan the fashion and style capital of the world.
  • Tip taxi drivers, although not as bad as their Milanon counterparts Milanese taxi drivers have still be known to rip tourists off - be careful and only pay what is on the meter.
  • Fill your wine glass to the top as this is a sign of poverty - apparently by filling your glass to the brim means that you don't know where the next glass is coming from.
  • Don't talk about the Mafia - Don Corleone and his buddies were glorified in the Godfather but most Italians hate the Mafia
  • Don't openly support the North's claim to seperatism and devolution. This is a very sensitive issue as many people in Milan still want to remain part of the republic
